| Ran Stratton knew his companion Melissa since childhood, her name a word her father had found pleasing. |
| Melissa bore to Ran three children, Tev the oldest, then Jeg, and last a daughter whom he named Melissa, a word he too found pleasing. |
| As boys, Tev and Jeg made the island their personal play ground, romping like wild bosk over the matted surfaces, taking daring leaps over the deadly marsh while Melissa, who they now called Sissa tended to domestic duties. As they grew into men they were taught to master the great bow and the whip, among other things. |
| In the year of his twenty-first Vernal equinox, Tev drank the wine of companionship with Ciena, the skinny girl of his childhood who had grown into a woman of extraordinary beauty. She too of the rence knew of the labors, her days spent leaning over the edge of a raft, harvesting, her nights spent in her companions arms. |
| Jeg left the islands shortly afterwards, but his story is for another day. |
| The third day after the second renewal of their companionship, it was time to move the island, a task that involves most who live upon it. Spaced evenly, the men took the east, hardest due to the direction they were moving, the women on the opposite side. A cry was heard, and all attention to the task ceased... Passage hands later, Tev too, left the rence. With his sisters pleading and parents permission, he took Sissa with him. ( to be continued ) |
